History of Gonstead Chiropractic
Gonstead Chiropractic is a chiropractic technique, named after Clarence Gonstead. Prior to developing the Gonstead technique,
worked as an automotive engineer. It is understood he used his engineering thinking and applied this to his understanding and development of the biomechanics of the human body. He was involved in the development of early chiropractic diagnosis equipment and went on to develop the Gonstead Chiropractic technique.
The Gonstead technique is based on the principles of assessing a patient’s current health, including the assessment of the patient’s health history, assessment of the patient’s posture and movement patterns, palpating the spine to assess for swelling or tenderness, x-ray analysis and measurement of heat variability’s. A Gonstead Chiropractic practitioner utilises this assessment to identify particular problems, such as muscle tenderness, muscle tightness, nerve pressure and inflammation, vertebrae disc integrity, spinal dysfunction and swelling. The purpose of this assessment is to identify whether or not chiropractic techniques are appropriate to alleviate the ailments concerning the patient.
The Gonstead Chiropractic Technique
Gonstead Chiropractic is based on principles developed by Clarence Gonstead. Through clinical research Gonstead was able to develop techniques to improve people’s pain through chiropractic adjustments. Throughout his 55 year career Gonstead oversaw over 4 million adjustments. The principle of this technique is to identify the source of the problem, treat the problem and provide long lasting results. A key strength of the Gonstead Chiropractic technique is the focus on scientific principles in assessing and treating spinal issues. The Nervoscope is a Gonstead Chiropractic specific piece of equipment that was developed specifically to identify heat variations across the spine – as stated above heat variations suggest that nerves are compressed and potentially inflamed.
Gonstead Chiropractic Training
Gonstead Chiropractic practitioners must meet specific levels of training including university training, specific Gonstead Chiropractic Training and ongoing professional development. In Australia RMIT is a leading university where the Gonstead Chiropractic technique is studied. Building on this, there are multiple Gonstead Chiropractic schools where the technique is studied and taught to chiropractors. The Gonstead Chiropractic Society Australia is a professional body that provides development and greater understanding of the Gonstead Chiropractic technique in Australia.
